Dóra Benyó’s (1989, Budapest, HU) artistic practice spans video, performance, and painting. Through her deeply personal yet politically charged works, she investigates themes of censorship, authority, and historical memory, often drawing on her family's experiences during Hungary's Soviet era while posing questions about how we relate to our histories and their (un)knowability.
To deepen her exploration of these themes, Dóra Benyó conducted interviews with individuals who knew her grandfather, uncovering personal stories about the Hungarian resistance before the change of regime. These conversations provided her with invaluable insights into the lived experiences of those who opposed the regime and the story about her grandfather’s life. This method of gathering oral histories not only informs her art but also honors the resilience of those who fought against oppression.
